NVC in the Workplace?
Image

[Please note: The views and opinions expressed in each post are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views and opinions of BayNVC as a whole.]

Does Nonviolent Communication work when you’re at work? This is a question I’ve been exploring for the last 11 years.

I very much enjoy visiting corporations and other organizations as a trainer, and also as a coach. I’ve coached people at every level of organizational hierarchy from entry level employees in their first job out of college to CEOs.

In workplaces, especially corporate workplaces, the skills I offer are often referred to as “soft skills.” This is to distinguish them from vocational skills, or “hard skills” like engineering, finance, design etc. Unfortunately the name lends itself to a variety of dismissive interpretations – so “soft skills” translates in some, perhaps many, minds to “unimportant skills for people who are soft.”

I often comment at workplace trainings that those who refer to communication and conflict resolution skills as “soft” probably find them a little “hard.”

How to Get People to Do What You Want (Without Regretting It Later)
Image

We depend on other people every day at work. Our supervisors, colleagues, and staff may support our ideas and projects, approve, and budget for things we want, help us overcome barriers and resistance, identify resources and solutions, and move projects forward. But what if we are at a standstill or at loggerheads with someone who is not cooperating or responding – or even actively blocking our way?

Thankfully, I've learned a way to resolve impasses and create greater buy-in, accountability, mutual trust, and goodwill... or at least give myself a much greater chance of these outcomes!

Click here to watch my 90-minute webinar that I led on May 9 for the Interagency Alternative Dispute Resolution Working Group (in coordination with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Office):

Empathy for Our Shame, Empathy for Our Pain
Image
Sometimes we do or say things that we later feel shameful or embarrassed about. Often we judge and blame ourselves for saying or doing the "wrong" thing. We say we're sorry, apologizing for our wrong-doings and promising ourselves and others that we'll be "good" or we'll do "better" next time. After all, we have learned that it's better for everyone to do the "right" thing. The problem with this type of behavior is that we are doing things because we think we "should" instead of doing things because we want to do them. We "should" ourselves and pay a price. Our actions then come from fear which sets us up for failure or falling short of the promises we make.

With NVC, we can transform this blaming and shaming way of thinking by hearing the stories we tell ourselves and then translating those thoughts into feelings and unmet needs.

Transforming Our Apologies Into Care-Filled Acknowledgements
Image
Many of us have said these familiar words “I’m sorry” multiple times throughout our lives. Sometimes we say them because we feel guilty about how much pain we caused the other person even when we didn’t mean to. Other times we say “I’m sorry” because we are the ones who actually feel pain - ie anger, resentment, etc. - and we just want it to be over as soon as possible. There could be other reasons too that we might use the words “I’m sorry.” Before I learned Nonviolent Communication (NVC), these words were a bandaid, a cover-up of what was actually going on inside me. I would say “I’m sorry” but I was still left with self-shaming and a lack of clarity about how to shift my feelings.

Dear Reader, Stop Tearing Children Away From Their Parents
Image
Dear Reader,

I've been heartbroken by recent news stories of children being torn away from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border.

If you've been heartbroken too, then will you click here now to add your name to this short and simple petition to Congress and Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen? It says: "Stop tearing children away from their parents. Families belong together."

One story described a mother whose baby girl was yanked from her arms while she was breastfeeding her. The mother cried out and tried to hang on to her child as government agents forcibly separated them.

Hundreds of other families have been torn apart since the Trump administration enacted this brutal new policy.

This shockingly cruel, traumatic, and inhumane practice has no place in our country. It must be stopped immediately, and without holding these children hostage to pass other anti-immigrant policies.

Will you add your name to this short and simple petition? It says:

Stop tearing children away from their parents. Families belong together.

Sign the petition
